Almond Milk

Homemade Almond Milk www.glutenfreetravelette.com

As a non-dairy milk drinker, looking at the ingredients on the cartons of almond, coconut, and rice milk at the store makes me cringe (although there are some exceptions like OMilk in Brooklyn). There are just so many ingredients, many of which I can't even pronounce or spell properly. I know they're in there to preserve the milk and occasionally I find the boxes of non-dairy milks very helpful - like on road trips or for camping. However, on a typical week at home, we easily finish a full carton of non-dairy milk between coffee, tea, and baking - so we don't really need all those preservatives.

Making my own non-dairy milk has always been appealing to me, so I put it on my life list and I'm happy to say that I now regularly make my own almond milk instead of buying it. It has way fewer ingredients and tastes so much better than the stuff that comes in the carton. My version of almond milk is unsweetened, unflavored, rich, and creamy. It makes a good substitute for half and half and the almond flavor really shines.

Gluten Free In The San Francisco Bay Area, California: The Peninsula

The day after I got back to Seattle from my month long stay in Brooklyn, New York - my husband and I hopped in the car with our pup and headed down to the San Francisco Bay Area to spend a few days with half of our family for the holidays. While it was a quick trip and packed with family gatherings (full of gluten free food) - we still managed to try out a few gluten free friendly spots up and down the Peninsula. We'll start down south in Sunnyvale and get all the way north to San Francisco itself!

If you've been reading my Gluten Free In posts for a while, you'll know that PF Changs is one of my favorites for a great (and safe) gluten free meal. One of the things I love about PF Changs is that it offers options for anyone. There are plenty of vegetarian dishes and if you're sensitive to soy like me - there are a few dishes you can get without it!

Gluten Free in Manhattan, New York

So I already told you about how fantastic the gluten free options in Brooklyn were - but now I want to tell you about Manhattan, where even more amazing gluten free food awaits you. The best part has to be the variety of food and how easy it is to get around via the subway for all these great options. Even after working long days, it was so simple to hop on the subway and grab dinner on the Upper East Side.

Hands down the best vegan food I've ever eaten and the ambiance of the restaurant was also just great - very warm and cozy. The gluten free menu is varied and extensive with plenty of options for all different kinds of eaters. Other things to love include the fresh juice and dreamy desserts.  My visit to Candle 79 including an amazing creamy squash risotto, a Katie Holmes sighting (she was waiting for take out while I was waiting for my table), a wonderful dinner companion that I met at Camp Mighty, and a brownie topped with chocolate sauce and ice cream. Now no offense to Katie or Caitlin - but that brownie was AMAZING.

Gluten Free In Salt Lake City, Utah: Alt Summit & More

gluten and/or free and/or salt and/or lake and/or city and/or utah

While I didn't have much time to explore during my first trip to Salt Lake City and not enough time to do my normal research - I did eat pretty darn well. The only sad part is, I don't have any pictures of the great food or the gluten free friendly places I got to eat at. I know, BAD FOOD BLOGGER BAD!!

First lets chat about the food experience at Altitude Design Summit.

At Alt, you're completely on your own for breakfast - which works for me. It's easier to just think about your own needs and not worry about anything else. When I registered, I selected the options for gluten and dairy free dietary restrictions and upon arrival I picked up two little cards indicating my needs to place on my plate during the lunches. In theory, these little cards are a great idea and should work as long as the wait staff are trained to them.

Meyer Lemon Curd

It's quite possible that Meyer Lemon Curd is one of my favorite things on the planet.

First of all, it's something made with Meyer Lemons - so thats a win all in itself. Second, it's creamy and tart and delicious when paired with many things. My favorite way to eat it, other than just by with a spoon, is to dip ginger cookies into it.

Since we're just getting to that magic time of year where you'll find Meyer Lemons in stores, I thought it was high time I shared my recipe for Meyer Lemon Curd with you. I'll make oodles of this throughout winter and then stock the back of my fridge with Weck Jars filled with it to get me through the rest of they year.
