Edible Garden Project: The Planting Plan
Thursday, April 5, 2012 at 9:00AM

So we're making some pretty serious headway on our Edible Garden Project. The plan for three raised beds you saw in this post is being translated into reality. We have the two beds built and filled with dirt with a third to be completed this weekend and a bunch of soil filled containers.
Our next step was to come up with the planting plan - what would we plant? We used Sunset's handy Western Garden Book of Edibles to plan our spacing. We ended up going somewhere in between the spacing recommendations from Sunset and the square foot gardening concept.
Here's the full list of what we're planting;
- Carrots
- Golden Beets
- Radishes
- Dill
- Garlic
- Fennel
- Leeks
- Mixed Lettuce
- Kale
- Arugula
- Collards
- Romanesco Broccoli
- Cucumbers
- Tomatoes
- Eggplant
- Sweet Red Pepper
- Jalapeno
- Habenero
- Calendula
- Artichokes
- Rhubarb
- Melons
- Sugar Pie Pumpkins
- Borage
- Mint
- Chamomile
- Thyme
- Cilantro
- Parsley
- Tea
- Blueberry
- Basil
- Nasturtiums
- Chives
- Scallions
And what we already have going;
- Tea
- Blueberry
- Lingonberry
- Pink Lemonade Blueberry
- Sage
- Meyer Lemon

One thing that was really helpful for us last year was to plant some of the nasturtiums in between and amongst the collard/kale/broccoli (basically all brassicas). Otherwise when the weather warms up the cabbage flies become a bit of a problem, but the nasturtiums lure them in with their big floppy leaves :)
Ooo thanks for the tip Brianne!
